Imagine a new Discipline that not only says that laity are important but grants laity equal authority in making decisions that affect ministry.
The Connection, a draft of a new Book of Discipline, celebrates the laity and affirms their call to servant leadership in the church and the community to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ through ministries of witness, mercy and justice for the transformation of the world.
The Connection recognizes that the Wesleyan movement and The United Methodist Church have been strongest and most fruitful when laity are called, nurtured, equipped, sent and supported to serve the church and lead it into the community.
The primary purpose of The Connection is to make it easier for congregations to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world and to help all United Methodists stay on a Wesleyan Path. The Connection affirms that the mission of United Methodism is best served by empowering congregations to nurture disciples who are equipped for transformational leadership in the church and community.
We invite you to read The Connection. Please pay particular attention to the section on Laity Membership. We think you will find it a refreshing change for a denomination in need of renewal.
The Connection is in draft. Your voice and input are important for this document to move forward to the 2020 General Conference. We want your feedback, suggestions and comments so that we can build on the foundation that is laid out on these pages and together, guided by the Spirit, continue to witness to the healing love of God around the world.
Thank you for your commitment to the United Methodist Church.
