Imagine a new Discipline that makes it easier and clearer to understand how to become a clergy person, how to serve as a clergy person, what is expected of clergy and how to address personnel issues without everything seeming like a trial.
The Connection recognizes that clergy leadership is essential for the health of congregations and for the entire church to advance the mission. It re-imagines clergy membership making it more accessible and equitable. The Connection creates a clear distinction between clergy membership and employment and sets clear expectations and a path for fruitfulness and accountability.
The Connection seeks to align all leaders of the church, lay, clergy and episcopal, so that they have the same core responsibilities. It simplifies the steps for becoming a clergy and aligns clergy into four statuses.
The primary purpose of The Connection is to make it easier for congregations to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world and to help all United Methodists stay on a Wesleyan Path. The Connection affirms that the mission of United Methodism is best served by empowering congregations to nurture disciples who are equipped for transformational leadership in the church and community.
We invite you to read The Connection and pay particular attention to the section on the clergy.
The Connection is in draft. Your voice and input are important for this document to move forward to the 2020 General Conference. We want your feedback, suggestions and comments so that we can build on the foundation that is laid out on these pages and together, guided by the Spirit, continue to witness to the healing love of God around the world.
Thank you for your commitment to our United Methodist Church.
